Seniors want to play last
season at Leominster's home
field
Letters to the Editor
September
9th 2005
As captains of the Leominster
High School football team we are
disappointed by the poor
planning and lack of
consideration given to the
students at Leominster High
School.
We understand that Doyle Field
is in need of a facelift, but
given the fact that the field is
not used all 12 months of the
year, we are disturbed by the
lack of concern given to the
students at LHS. Why wasn't this
project started after graduation
last June and has any thought
been given as to where
graduation ceremonies will be
held in June of 2006?
There has been no communication
to any team as to why all our
home games have been given away
when nothing has been done to
Doyle Field and nothing is
slated to begin.
In this age of budget cuts and
high gas prices we have given
our opposing teams all of the
ticket money, the concession
stand money, and the home field
advantage when there is no
definitive plan in place for
Doyle Field. Leominster has
given Fitchburg the Thanksgiving
game with at least $25,000 to
benefit their sports program,
but we are required to pay a $75
user fee and, in addition, sell
discount tickets.
This decision also affects the
band, the soccer team, the
cheerleaders and the families
and friends of all of the above.
We are deeply concerned that our
friends with new driver's
licenses and our older fans will
be traveling to support their
teams to distances so much
further than Doyle Field.
We are upset that we are paying
for busing to those opposing
fields, yet we are giving away
the money collected at these
games to the opposing teams.
We are expecting the people
making the decisions about Doyle
Field to say that the bleachers
are unsafe.
To this we reply that the
bleachers were safe for the high
school graduation and Starburst
last June, so how could they
possibly be that unsafe two
months later?
Who has been allowed to give
away all of the home games, all
of the ticket money, all of the
concession stand money as well
as the home field advantage to
opposing teams when Doyle Field
remains unchanged and unused!
